Drift Adds Creative Mode and New Building Pieces

Build your dream outpost on an asteroid.

Drift, an early access survival game that launched on May 12th last year, may be the sleeper hit of 2023 that you missed. KAR Games, the developer behind the game, hasn’t stopped working on their game, which has lovingly been called Raft in Space, and it has released the latest major patch.

This update was the culmination of feedback from the community of players of the game, and one of the biggest parts of this update is the inclusion of Creative Mode. When starting a new game or even loading an existing save game, you have the option to disable resource costs, enable infinite survival, and other options that allow you to focus less on survival and more on building.

Inventory sorting was another huge ask from the community, and we got it. There are actually two options: the first is normal sorting of inventory, and the second is a quick sort that will quickly move items from your inventory to a storage container, as long as the container already contains at least one of the items, allowing us to quickly sort and drop off items to get us back into the action.

Angled ship pieces are making an appearance in this update, allowing for more creative and interesting builds. Our robot pal, as nice as it is, was a little too up-close and personal for some players, so it will now give you a bit more space to breathe.

Crafting machines now have quick-craft buttons with three new options. Clear, add 1, or add 5 to quickly que up what you need to craft, but there is more. Building from storage containers was also added, so now when crafting, it will first try to take the crafting materials from your inventory, and then storage containers will make crafting less of a chore and organizing chests more useful.

Some other smaller changes were small visual updates, such as adding outlines to models and adding a better sense of depth. Controller support increased light output from flashlights, along with fixing some unexplained crashes and small bugs and getting rid of crazy amounts of lag.

There were also some of the other additions that came in the last update, dubbed the Sand Update, which added a new desert biome that you can come across in your travels through space. This sandy area is covered in silicate dust and has a ton of other resources, not to mention shipwrecks, islands, and more to explore.

Long-range scanners, which consume large amounts of power but show rare resources, even pick up strange signals. Launchpads can quickly get you off your ship and into space. And my favorite is allowing you to build outposts on asteroids, drive a spike into the asteroid, claim it as your own, and build the outpost of your dreams.

What are your thoughts on the new additions? Let me know in the comments below.
