Everything You Need to Know About the Early Access Release of Subnautica 2

The sequel is going to be huge!

My most anticipated survival game, Subnautica 2, is almost here! Unknown Worlds used the game’s showcase to confirm that it will enter Early Access on May 14, giving players a first clear look at the new planet, the multiplayer setup, and the systems that will define the game at launch.

The new trailer set the tone right away. It leaned into the series’ usual mix of wonder and danger. The team also pointed to the return of the Architects, new biomes, strange creatures, and a larger focus on how the environment reacts to the player. The game still follows the spirit of the original Subnautica, but the showcase made it clear that this is a new world rather than a return to the old one.

One of the biggest changes is co-op, which is new for the series. Unknown Worlds said the game is still built as a Subnautica experience first, not as a co-op game built from the ground up around teamwork. Players can still go in alone, and the team said the solo path should feel like the best way to keep the series’ usual sense of isolation. At the same time, the game supports up to 4 players, which should give survival, exploration, and base building a very different feel when friends join in.

The Early Access version will also include a new vehicle called the Tadpole, which looks set to play a big part in how players move through the world. During the showcase, the team showed how it can be fitted with different chassis and hard points, letting players change its role instead of treating it like one fixed machine. One setup is built for speed, while others can be used for storage or utility. That approach should give exploration more variety, especially when players need to leave the vehicle behind, switch tools, and keep pushing deeper into tighter spaces.

Base building is another area that looks much more flexible than before. The team spent a lot of time showing off windows, lighting, grow beds, and sculpted shapes that let players build more detailed spaces. They stressed that the goal is not just to make bigger bases, but to give players more ways to shape a base around their own style. That includes tighter layouts, larger social spaces in co-op, and more room to experiment with the look of each build.

Unknown Worlds says Subnautica 2 will remain in Early Access for about 2 to 3 years, with the full release planned as a more polished version with more content and a broader feature set. During that time, the studio expects to add new biomes, creatures, craftables, and story content through regular updates, while also improving the game through fixes and optimization. The developer also confirmed that the price will rise after Early Access and that community feedback will help shape what the game becomes along the way.

Subnautica 2 will launch on May 14, 2026, at 08:00 PDT / 15:00 UTC for $29.99 USD on Steam, Epic Games, and Xbox.
