Sons of the Forest: New Details About Cannibal Tribes, Seasons and Building

Start a war between cannibals.

Sons of the Forest is just around the corner and Endnight Games reveals more details about the game in a recent interview. From this, we learned more about the different tribes and the impact the player will have on the island’s ecosystem.

Tribes and Companions

We know a great deal about the first companion you will meet in Sons of the Forest. Kelvin is a fellow soldier who crash-landed on the island with you. While he suffers from a lot of head trauma after the accident and can no longer hear anything he is actually a hard worker. By writing tasks on a notepad you can tell Kelvin to do simple tasks like gather materials or defend the area. Later in the game, we will meet a mysterious and friendly Virginia, a three-legged mutant who will team up with the player. More non-enemy encounters have been confirmed, however, we will have to wait and see who they will be.

The developers expanded on what we already knew about the tribe system in the game.

Not all ‌cannibals play nice with each other and form their own groups on the island. If you lead one into the other, you will start a war between them. But you might want to watch out for how many tribes you take down. When you kill all the mutants in a location they will stay dead and eventually this can give rise to stronger and unique monsters to roam the overworld as there is no one to stop them anymore. When you kill one of the tribes the others will notice and slowly start to prepare for the player: wearing protective gear or sending a small army to your base to take you out.

Seasons and Building

Over the course of the game the seasons will change. This will change the island slowly over time so the player can get prepared for what is to come. The harshest will of course be Winter. Berries will no longer grow, animals will hide, which will make finding meat harder. Water sources freeze over making fishing and collecting water from them no longer an option. The good thing is this will also impact mutants. As the season gets colder they won’t venture out as far and will wear warmer clothing. They will get more aggressive once they notice you have food and will try and steal it from you.

The building has gotten a major overhaul from the first game. While you can still use the ghost blueprints to build your base there is another way. You will now be able to place every log down and split them however you want to create a custom house.

Sons of the Forest will be released towards the end of February on Steam and can be played with up to eight players.
