The Final ‘Tales from the Far Territory’ DLC Chapter Arrives in The Long Dark

Now you can return to your uniquely customized home.

The Tales from the Far Territory DLC for Hinterland’s survival game The Long Dark was released back in December 2022. Now, two years later, they have finished the long-awaited final chapter, introducing the reworked Cougars enemy, a trader, and instant camera, the safehouse customization system.

The first iteration of cougars didn’t resonate well with players, so the developers revised the dangerous beast based on feedback from the community. Cougars are territorial and prefer rocky, densely forested areas. If they have made a location their home, you can spot this by scratch markings on trees and animal carcasses. They won’t appear everywhere, but you’ll know for sure if you see an old sign warning of cougars, which means they have been sighted there in the past. You will have to keep an eye out for sounds or the previously mentioned signs. If you encounter one, try to maintain your distance as they are very dangerous, and getting attacked by one can lead to major injuries. When they spot you from afar, they will try to stalk you, slowly getting closer. To give you a fighting chance, these animals will not be in the area when you first start the game. However, depending on your difficulty, they can spawn and claim a territory between days five and 30. If you’d rather not deal with them at all, you can always turn off cougar spawning entirely from the options menu.

During an aurora see if you can spot an emergency radio as you might hear from Sutherland, a trader saying he is near. You can get his attention with a flare and he will come closer to shore. When you earn his trust he will trade rare and new items.

Another new addition to the DLC is the introduction of the instant camera. While surviving on the island, why not snap a photo of the environment or animals? You can frame these and hang them up in your new safe house.

The Long Dark has also added the safehouse customization system, which this is part of the free update and allows you to modify over 100 indoor locations by moving around the furniture and turning it into your own home.

Will you be designing the best looking house, or do you feel adventurous and will be picking a fight with the cougars? Let me know in the comments.
