Hinterland Studio has announced the first-ever paid expansion pass for their winter survival game The Long Dark. There is also an update on episode 5 for the Wintermute story. 

Tales from the Far Territory

This DLC will contain three brand-new story regions set in a different area on Great Bear Island. New gameplay systems are coming with this expansion such as a safe house customization feature, more complex cooking recipes, traders, and more. You will explore these new areas while completing narrative-themed challenges while surviving the harsh and cold weather. To get to these new places you will need to make a long and tough journey following railway tracks, tunnels, and caves until you get to the new hub area which connects all the locations.

The expansion pass will launch with one of the three areas finished with the rest coming over the spend of a year. The estimated release date is December 2022 for Steam and Epic Games. Early 2023 for console and will cost $19,99 USD.

Free Content

While working on the Tales of the Far Territory DLC the team is still working on episode 5 of the Wintermute story for the base game. Their current plan is to release this in late 2023.

A few free content updates were revealed like the global loot and wildlife reset. Hand-placed objects and animals have been moved around so when the update goes live you will have to find these new locations again. A new item the thermos will be added alongside a lot of new first-person animations. If you enjoy exploring keep an eye out for visor notes as these will lead you to hidden caches. A lot of changes were made to the save system. This sadly means that old save files will be incompatible with the new version and if you want to explore the new content you will have to start over. For PC you will still be able to play the old save file but you won’t get any of the new content on that.

Winterland revealed they are working on multiple games besides The Long Dark and they will share more information in the coming year.
